The Invitation

I've re-started to read J.I. Packer's book entitled, "Knowing God," and in it he has a great quote by Charles Spurgeon that I find "blanket-like!" By that I mean comforting, and still amazing and wonderful, so....here it is:

"Oh, there is, in contemplating Christ, a balm for every wound; in musing on the Father, there is a quietus for every grief; and in the influence of the Holy Ghost, there is a balsam for every sore. Would you lose your sorrow? Would you drown your cares? Then go, plunge yourself in the Godhead's deepest sea; be lost in his immensity; and you shall come forth as from a couch of rest, refreshed and invigorated. I know nothing which can so comfort the soul; so calm the swelling billows of sorrow and grief; so speak peace to the winds of trial, as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead."

Spurgeon was only twenty years old at the time he spoke these words. His quote is in the first chapter of Packer's book, and is a warm invitation to continue reading. And I shall do so.

Oh how that ministered to my heart tonight! What a comfort!

I had never hear that particular quote by Spurgeon. Just reading it I could feel the peace and quiteness of soul surround me.

The most pertinent of questions: Would you lose your sorrow? Spurgeon gives the perfect answer...and sadly, there are even Christians who would rather keep their sorrow...and visit the doctor for pills... than follow the simple advise...

It seems to me that in the fullness of His presence, which would be something like a flood, not much could remain. To give something up for everything! That's how God does it.

What a wonderful quote! It truly is blanket like!

So often individuals are skewed in their view of God, and equally skewed in what they miss about God, meaning the parts of His nature and character that would draw them to Him if only they could understood.

I have read and re-read the quote several times. I like it...it is like a warm blanket or a refreshing glass of ice tea!

You're right Mary Lee. We just came back from a heated walk, and so I'm going with the iced-tea! : ) Speaking of, how are things with the AC in the office?
