Letters to Africa and Teaching Songs

Our Church has a sister church-a long distance sister- in Africa. I can't remember which country it's in however. This month our entire church is focusing on outreach/missions. Every department is involved somehow! In Children's Church yesterday, the kids wrote letters to the children in the African Church. It was reported to us by an informer, and I smile, that Bethany's letter included the following: "I have 1 dog, 1 cat, and 3 crickets!" Well, truth be known she had four, but one died enroute to it's....home. Daniel's group:they're singing a song for the congregation. I have never heard the song, but yesterday when Miss Nancy told them they were going to go into "big church" (cause we're all just a little too big in there) and teach us the song, Daniel just rolled his eyes, sighed and exclaimed, "Oh no, that's gonna take forever!!! (reflecting perhaps on personal experience?) We love Sundays at our house. We love to come home and talk about what we learned, the funny thing a friend did to the children's director that morning, how many cookies they may have eaten, etc. But Danny and I love the things we hear through the grapevine. It's then our hearts explode and are flooded with joy.

Yes, Susan. Who knows what "forever" is comprised of in the mind of a 6-year old. It was our day for great Bethany and Daniel reports.

So cute...love their stories! BTW, I grew up in South Africa, so Africa is very dear to my heart. :) Thanks for your comments on my blog...love those verses from Isaiah--God is so good. Blessings, my friend.

I'm with Daniel on it taking "forever" to teach a song in big church. Whenever I teach a new worship song to our congregation, it does seem like it takes forever before they finally start to catch on and actually worship as they sing.
Love the "cricket" story, too. Funny!
Have a great week. :) Brenda

Kathy: I did get your comment about SL LA and science.
I do not use SL's LA program. I did for a couple of years but was not pleased with it. I use various things for different ages, including: Teach Your Child to Read...; First Language Lessons by Susan Wise Bauer; Explode the Code series; Spectrum Writing series; Daily Grams; and Easy Grammar. I also teach essay writing and sometimes grammar for our co-op and do creative writing at home or teach at co-op. My creative writing lessons are available for free on my blog and I do have various links on my sidebar to language arts suggestions.

I used SL's science for K-6th. I really liked it; I had a very science-minded first child. I always bought the ready-made science kits that went along with the program because I am a procrastinator and would never have gotten all that stuff on my own in a timely fashion. I guess in a sense we still use SL's recommended science, but my son goes to a co-op where he has done Apologia physical science, biology, and now chemistry. We did not do the general science.

I am not doing SL's science program with my younger children. Instead, we do a combination of various science lapbooks of our own creation AND they take classes at our local co-op. My daughter is going through Apologia's botany at co-op right now, and my 2nd grader has had various hands-on science classes there.

I hope that helps! Please feel free to email me at shc (dot) small (at) gmail (dot) com if you have more questions!

Our sister church is in Liberia, West Africa. Love your blog and your family stories, so glad we are part of the same church family!

Liberia, of course! Why didn't I think of that. Beth, I couldn't be happier about us being in the same church family.....our kids love to have you over every chance we get (they mirror our feelings exactly, I might add!) : ) Thanks for clearing up this important "where" detail! Hugs.
