The Eye of the Stove: Episode One

For a new twist on contemporary culture's love for cooking shows I bring to you, "The Eye of the Stove: Cooking Failures Worth Mentioning." Today's story: Taco Tires Go Flat! Is this a one of a kind story? A one of a kind meal? One can only hope. Photography is not my thing and it's just as well. I don't even want to hear the story of 1000 words such pictures would paint! No, I'm not a great cook. But you gotta hand it to me, I try.

I thought, what can I do...surely there's a creative way, some appealing way to reach the depths of a 6 year-old boy's tummy, and touch his boy-heart while I'm at it. I had the brain storm of fixing bagels like tacos. You've seen it done before I'm sure. But was I satisfied with that? NO. I had to go and give it some clever name to appeal to the guy I just know is going to be a car fanatic: chrome wheels, fast-shifting gears and a spoiler. "Taco Tires." Yes, the perfect name!

So I scavenge the freezer for that select package of frozen "cow's destiny gone bad", and pop it in the microwave. Too long. Nothing that a package of taco seasoning won't fix, right? Taco tires. Sure. What are tires made of??? Rubber! That's right, rubber. What could taste better than Taco Tires? Taco Tires without the meat, for starters. (Yes, this post is loaded with puns!)

Here's what I finally came up with for the recipe for Taco-Bagels a.k.a. "Taco Tires" : Bagels, cheese sprinkles, diced tomatoes, chopped green onions. Pop the wheelie under the broiler for less than what you think it should take, and wa-la! Taco Tires. Add the Sour Cream for the white-wall effect and enjoy. Whew. I wasn't sure how this was going to end. Now, let's take this recipe for a test drive!

May I be the first to comment on my own post: Bethany's comment on the mealwas "They were a little chewy."(Aren't all tires chewy?) Daniel said something that included a pun also, not even meaning to, and we decided they should be called Taco Bagels. Even the dog seemed hesitant to eat the leftovers. I laughingly said it was because most dogs know to stay away from the wheel of a car.

You and Whit and Whimsy's posts are comical tonight. Loved both of them.

I think you are pretty creative! Next time it won't be "Chewy" and you'll have a hit on your hands!

Sandra, I went by and read her post and loved it also. The bulging eyeballs said it all!

Mari, I made the mistake of using "canned" diced tomatoes which turned my bagels soggy. I cannot stand soggy bread. Ew. Anyway, lesson learned, and lots of laughs in the process.

Lady hesitated to eat the leftovers?? That says it all!

Way to try your hand at a creative meal! I've truly had my share of chewy meals!!!

So, are you saying you aren't submitting this one for the Fall Recipe Exchange on my blog????

This gave me quite the chuckle.

Imagination always trumps reality in my book...so I can see/taste this classic! Eating tips? Perhaps lick off the toppings and use the "tire" as a frizbe...Your own home made happy meal...
